2018 Black vs Blue Food Drive is Historic In More Ways Than One
What a year! Trinity students out-collected Bell for the first time in the history of the Black and Blue Food Drive, but couldn’t stop the BLUE side of the district from winning the overall victory again this year. All told, this community raised a record number of food donations in 2018. In fact, you beat last year’s total by more than 30,000 cans!
A Full Breakdown of the Results:
Total Items Donated: 102,882
Elementary School Winners: River Trails (44.17 items per student)
Junior High Winners: Bedford JH (8.17 items per student)
High School Winners: Trinity HS (4.39 items per student)
Overall Winners: TEAM BLUE
Special Recognition: Donna Park Elementary (second-highest per-capita total in the district); KEYS High School (beat both Trinity and Bell in per-capita competition)
Sorting Time!
Perhaps even more impressive than the incredible number of donations they brought in are the hours HEB ISD students have spent volunteering since the Food Drive closed. On the Saturday following the check presentation ceremony, several dozen students, teachers, and families were on hand to sort that record-setting pile of cans. Included in that group were students from Bedford Junior High and Central Junior High’s volleyball team.
Thanks to their hard work over the course of three hours, we’ve almost finished itemizing those donations for distribution through the New Hope Center. One more group will attempt to tackle the remaining piles on Wednesday, October 3.
Of course, if you’re looking for a way to get involved, we can always use more help getting the warehouse in order. Email Thaddeus ([email protected]) to ask about ways to help out in the New Hope Center and Warehouse on a long-term basis.
