CPR Goes International

Restoration Church, Euless, (one of the churches in the 6 Stones Coalition) has been doing mission work in Comayagua, Honduras for many years. A missionary from Restoration Church started a school there ten years ago.  This summer, a team from Restoration, along with volunteers from the local community and volunteers from 6 Stones / CPR were able to help renovate a family’s home.

The family they helped lives in a two-room structure, perched on the side of a mountain.  There is one bedroom and a living room.  The kitchen is outside.  They have four young children and one older daughter.  The husband struggles with alcohol and is not always present.  The mother ministers to children in the area, teaching them to recite Bible verses. 

The area around them has “gang-controlled barrios” or neighborhoods. A man was murdered in a soccer field by the church the night after the team arrived.  The home they worked on was just 200 yards from that location. And yet, the CPR team reported that they never felt threatened while they were completing their work.

While the team was there, a program was going to be held at the church.  Because of the recent murder, the program was moved to the school further away in the city.  The mother brought 75 children to the program from her barrio.  In spite of the gang violence, cramped living quarters and extreme need around her, a contentment and peace emanated from the woman, a team member said.  And, she is sharing that peace with the children to whom she ministers.

Wes Higdon, Director of Community Revitalization, 6 Stones Mission Network, said what they did in Honduras is right in line with the work the CPR teams do in the mid-cities.  He said, “We bring neighbors, communities and schools together to help each other.”

The CPR team met with the Assistant Mayor in Comayagua and presented him with a 6 Stones shirt and a letter from Mary Lib Saleh, Euless Mayor.  The local mayor thanked the team for coming to help.

“Community Powered Revitalization is needed everywhere in all communities here in the states and abroad,” explained Higdon.  “What we do here in Hurst, Euless and Bedford is a picture of what can be done all over the country.  A significant impact is made when we work together to build stronger communities.”
